Keeping watch… A timber gatekeeper’s hut has been saved from the scrap yard by Huddersfield brothers Joe and Johnny Marsden. The hut has been a familiar sight at the St Peter’s Street entrance of Huddersfield Post Office for many years but a new concrete box has now been built. The brothers are to take the box to use in their new car park off Beast Market. And in return the Huddersfield Hotel and Johnny’s Nightclub owners are to provide a commissionaire’s chair for PO gatekeeper Brian Lawton, who recently celebrated his 60th birthday at the Hotel. “We thought it was a shame that this hut should be scrapped after so many years in Huddersfield, so we decided to save it” said Joe. Johnny and Joe toast the swap with the help of Mr. Lawton.

The following pictures show the Sentry Box being transported from the Post Office in Northumberland Street to The Central Lodge.
